Benitoite is a rare barium-titanium silicate that has captured attention for its striking sapphire-blue crystals and exceptional rarity. First discovered in 1907 in San Benito County, California, it remains the official state gem of California and one of the most distinctive collector minerals. Crystals are typically small but show sharp trigonal forms with excellent transparency and brilliance. While best known in its deep blue variety, benitoite can also occur in colorless or light-colored crystals, sometimes with a subtle violet hue. It is often found in association with minerals such as neptunite and natrolite, which provide attractive contrasts on the host rock. Because fine specimens are almost exclusively sourced from California, benitoite is highly sought after for both its beauty and its extreme rarity, making it an actual prize in any mineral collection.
