Kunzite
Kunzite, the pink to violet variety of spodumene, is one of the most admired gem minerals from Afghanistan, especially from the Nuristan and Kunar regions. These specimens are celebrated for their large, well-terminated crystals, vibrant colors, and striking pleochroism, which allows them to shift shades from soft pink to deeper violet depending on the viewing angle. The intensity of color is due to trace amounts of manganese, and some crystals display intense saturation, while others show pastel tones that glow beautifully under light. Afghan kunzite is also known for producing exceptional bicolor and multicolor crystals, where shades of green, purple, or even golden tones combine in a single specimen, creating a remarkable visual effect. Some pieces are associated with other minerals such as tourmaline or albite, further enhancing their appeal. Due to its size, transparency, and often flawless form, kunzite from Afghanistan stands as one of the finest sources globally. It remains highly prized among both collectors and connoisseurs of fine minerals.
