Aquamarine
Aquamarine, the blue to blue-green variety of beryl, is admired worldwide for its serene color, transparency, and elegant crystal habit. Its name comes from the Latin aqua marina, meaning “water of the sea,” reflecting its calm, ocean-like hues. Crystals often form as long, hexagonal prisms with sharp terminations and excellent luster, ranging from pale sky blue to rich, saturated tones depending on trace amounts of iron. Fine aquamarine is renowned for its exceptional clarity and size, with some crystals attaining remarkable dimensions while maintaining gemmy interiors. Notable localities include Brazil, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Madagascar, each producing crystals with distinctive qualities of color and form. Highly valued as both a gemstone and a collector’s mineral, aquamarine combines beauty, elegance, and geological significance, making it one of the most treasured members of the beryl family.
