Rubellite Tourmaline

Rubellite, the vivid red to pink variety of tourmaline, is admired for its intense color saturation and fine crystal form. Afghanistan produces excellent examples, often sharp, lustrous, and well-terminated, sometimes associated with quartz and albite that enhance their visual appeal. Russia’s Malkhan pegmatites are among the most celebrated sources, yielding deeply saturated raspberry to pink rubellite crystals, often with quartz or feldspar. These are considered some of the finest known worldwide. Brazil, especially Minas Gerais, has long been famous for its classic rubellite specimens, recognized for their brilliant colors and impressive crystal sizes. Madagascar also produces notable rubellite, characterized by crystals with attractive color tones and good transparency. While not as historic as Brazil or Russia, Madagascar rubellite adds essential variety and quality to the global offerings. Together, Afghanistan, Russia, Brazil, and Madagascar represent the key localities for rubellite, each producing unique specimens that highlight the mineral’s rarity and desirability among collectors.
