Faden Quartz
Faden quartz is instantly recognizable by its distinctive white “thread” — a line of inclusions running through the crystal, formed as the quartz healed and continued to grow after fracturing. This unique feature gives faden quartz its name (from the German word Faden, meaning “thread”) and makes it one of the most fascinating quartz varieties. Crystals often form in tabular, flattened shapes, with the central thread clearly visible, creating a dramatic and highly aesthetic effect. The Kharan District of Balochistan Province, Pakistan, is celebrated as one of the world’s premier sources of faden quartz. Specimens from this locality display superb clarity, striking thread lines, and sharp crystal form, ranking among the finest known. Other occurrences are found in Switzerland and Brazil, but Pakistani material is particularly sought after for its size and quality. With its rare internal thread and distinctive growth history, faden quartz combines scientific intrigue with strong visual appeal. Collectors prize these crystals not only for their unique formation process but also for the exceptional examples from Pakistan, which stand as benchmarks for the variety.
