This is a very unusual Chinese calcite specimen showing a tall, elongated, almost columnar crystal of rich orange calcite standing upright on a contrasting light matrix. The main calcite crystal has that warm, tangerine-to-apricot color that Chinese material is admired for, and it is beautifully sprinkled with a layer of sparkling secondary calcite crystals that give it a frosted look and make it glitter under light. Around the base and on the back of the matrix, there is a fine drusy growth of calcite and iron-toned crystals, which adds texture and depth, so the piece does not look flat from any side. The composition is excellent because the main crystal rises vertically while a smaller calcite growth projects forward, creating a very natural display that is perfect for a cabinet showing.
This style is typical of calcite finds from China, especially from deposits in Hunan and Guangxi, where orange calcite grew on pale matrix and later received a late-stage calcite druse. Chinese calcites became popular because of their color, sculptural growth, and good contrast, and this specimen is a good representative of that production. With its intense color, sparkling overgrowth, and elegant upright form, it is a highly aesthetic Chinese calcite that will display beautifully.
